What would be the immediate benefits of the 8GB 1070 vs 6GB 1060 on a 1080p display?

It will last a lot longer, than a gtx 1060 6gb would and you can max out settings with much higher framerates.

I know, but we’re talking 1080p here. Are games really that demanding on PC that the 1060 won’t be enough?

Sure it handles most of the pc game just fine in 60fps, but for those few more demanding(unoptimized) titles, the gtx 1070 would give massive headroom to work with.

Sure you can upgrade the gpu later on, if your 1080p gaming start to struggle.
Pc: i7 6700k/980 ti/16gb ram and Ps4.

This and only this, the Ryzen 1600X is another valid option but with the 8600K beating it by 25fps in some games I'd take the Intel.

Actually this unimpressive looking cpu cooler slightly beats out the Cryorig h7 cpu cooler in performance and it is also semi-passive one:
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/dqjWGX/arctic-freezer-33-cpu-cooler-acfre00028a

But for overclocking the 8600k, i would pick even more massive cpu cooler for it.

It may be 1-2c cooler but it's incredibly ugly and I wouldn't stick it in my case.

Also good luck getting better cooling in a $1000 budget with a 8600K and 1070 :-/ Cryorig is his best option. I managed to OC a 7700K to 4.9 with a Cryorig H7 in a S340 case for a customer I built. If he doesn't care about looks and is getting a windowless case he can get the Artic cooler.
7700K@5.0 - 1080 - EVGA 750 - 16GB DDR4 - Z270 ASUS
H100v2 - Evolv ATX - 500GB SAMSUNG SSD - 1TB WD BLACK

Had a closer look at the Freezer 33 plus one and it is not a looker, but the performance makes up to it and it was easy to install too. For most people the looks should not matter in a non-windowed case anyway, myself are more concerned about the performance and noise the cpu cooler produces.

All of the Arctic product looks pretty ugly, but they are known to perform great for the money.

Ok, so this (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vZhPPs) seems to be the final build that I’m going to be going with. Might replace the 1060 with a 1070, but probably won’t as I’ll upgrade the video card a year or two down the line. How good is this going to be @ 1080p high / ultra for the foreseeable future? I’m more concerned about the 60fps than fully maxing out.

You could save tiny bit of money with the case fans:

And i would buy a small ssd for the OS.

Holy 75 on case fans.. The 5 dollar rosewill ones work just fine and make sure your not using more exhaust fans than intake.

Pentium g4560 with an rx 480 and 8 gigs of ram will run almost everything at 1080/ultra/60. Some games you'll have to turn off a setting or two.

I paid $450, including windows, already had a monitor. I play witcher 3 at 4k with 45fps and 2k with 60fps and the only thing turned off is hairworks.

I'm not suggesting you buy this, I know ryzen has changed some things. A few knew gpus and some price changes. I'm just saying that anyone telling you to spend $800+ is smoking crack.

What I did with the OS. Only game I'll ever put on it would be the next Battlefield game.

Run an HDMI cord to your microwave. I kid; your toaster.

But seriously slap a 1060 in something and roll on.
