For mods and online go with NWN 1.
For story and gameplay (original story not mods) go with NWN2.
Also grab them both when the go on sale on GoG.com.

I could be wrong, but there are mods for both games that fix bugs, improve AI, etc. I really need to dive into my CRPG backlog, these games actually challenge you.
If you don't like microtransactions in full priced AAA games, vote with your wallet and don't buy those games.

Mask of the Betrayer is like, pretty much the only reason to mess with these games (outside of some of the mods).

It's amazing.

@VaultDweller21 mind me asking what made you come and look at the Neverwinter Nights series?

I totally agree with the post suggesting you get both if possible. I still need to play through NwN2 but the first game kinda felt empty, and it made me crave the addition of a community. If you're into DnD as a whole, I really do suggest scoping out the RP community for the first game. I honestly do not know why the second game didn't take off like the first did, even though people here seem to think of it as the better game. Might just be the mechanics are more inline with modern games opposed to the first one being truly old school.

I honestly never knew about the first one's online community.

NWN 1 was a big disappointment to me when I first got it back in the day, it was a game that relied on mods and the community, and I was never into those sorts of games.

Have heard Mask of the Betrayer for two is amazing, but I could never get through the original campaign.
Geforce GTX whatever, i7 something or rather, some sticks of ram, an SSD and a Hard Drive with stuff on it.
