Conversations like this make me wish I was a little bit more about computers, because I feel like there is something horribly wrong with compressing, but I can't put my finger on it.

There isn't anything wrong with compression outside of utilizing cpu cycles that could otherwise be used for something more beneficial than decompression. If you're not familiar with compression, the basic premise is to reduce the amount of repeating 1 or 0.

So check out this simplified example, let's take this gibberish binary:
10010001 11101100 0000011 11111111
All repeating digits get grouped with a note how many times said digit repeats
10(2)10(3) 1(3)01(2)0(2) 0(5)1(2) 1(8)
Numbers in the parenthesis note how many times the digit to it's left is repeated. This compression savings can vary depending on how much repeating code is present in said data to be compressed.

I know this much actually, but thank you.

Check your load times, that's what it's supposed to improve.

Just Decompress the Compressed Files in RAM and leave it there as needed.

It's not very hard to do.

how is this different from the "compress this disk to save space" option

I'm curious what the difference is too.

Something I found somewhere else said it was a different kind of compression so I think you could technically use both...

Some sources say that what COMPACT does is different from what the Compress contents to save disk space option in Windows Explorer does.

Indeed, it looks like the difference is when Compress contents to save disk space enables NTFS compression that uses compression units (CU), COMPACT uses sparse files.

However, NTFS compression does not support compression on file systems where cluster size is greater than 16 Kbytes.
