Is this still a viable cpu for gaming or should I start to plan my upgrade?

No point upgrading until the PS5 nears launch because you have plenty of power for this-gen ports. That is when you'll know what kind of CPU power you'll need for next-gen ports. Buy right once around the beginning of a console-gen and you should be set the whole way through with just GPU upgrades as desired ...though you can do the same for GPU if one that satisfies the requirements exist.
Explain why MSI needs our laptops on top of the wholesale cost they're already get from us in their GT72(s)/GT80(s) trade in program? MSI isn't to be trusted!

I haven't run into any issues with it, aside from Battlefield 1 wanting to draw every last drop of blood from it for some reason. Had to cap that to 80fps.

Outside of that, it's fine.

When will 6 and 8 core CPUs be needed?

Needed? Not for a long time. Useful? Probably a few years.

Only upgrade to 6 or 8 core if you need the extra processing power for 3D modeling, server virtualization, 4K encoding / transcoding and high-end streaming.
