I'm still using a first gen i3 for office work and it has no issues at all. I wouldn't want to encode video with it, but it doesn't bat an eye at spreadsheets or internet usage. Also still runs Photoshop fine, though my 4GB RAM on that machine is getting to be a limitation.

I have an i7 3770 for absolutely no reason on my work desktop. I also have a i5 6300U on my laptop for no reason. Let me tell you want I use my PC's for, Office 365. That's it.

Ask your boss if your work PC is not up to the task and say the upgrade will be cheaper than paying you overtime because your computer is too slow.
You're not obligated to attend every argument.
