Say, $200 or less, or if not then $300 or less? Right now I'm still using a dual-core i5 650, so I doubt a quad-core that outperforms it would be terribly expensive. Anyone got any recommendations?

a new cpu will require a new motherboard and new RAM since that one is so old. you could try to find the best CPU available for your specific motherboard, but they don't make them anymore so they'll probably be expensive, or used.

The primary problem is that you'll need to change motherboard and RAM as well.

You might be able to find a cheap i5 750 or i7 870 second hand, that would work in your motherboard and be able to play modern games, but they're not worth overpaying for.
It's also possible you could find i5 2xxx or 3xxx system.

This. Your socket type is LGA 1156 and if you're not looking to upgrade your mobo, you're looking at old overpriced CPUs or something questionable off of ebay.

Right now Ryzen 3 is the best budget CPU for gaming, at least until cheaper 300 series motherboards launch in early 2018.
