No such thing as cheap ram anymore. Just got to bite the bullet if you need to upgrade. Still hard to believe a bit over a year ago you could get 16 gb ddr3 for $60... and it came with a game smh.

So they're just never going down? I don't understand why they are more expensive now. Smart phones have been around for 10 years. Are they manufacturing so many more that they have such an impact on the supply??

Probably more and more electronics are using ram, who knows. So there isn't a cool down period for cheap ram. Demand is always up.

Best time is in that transition period between ram. Might be a while tho since ddr 4 is fairly recent.

and yeah, more ram on devices and a limited amount of manufacturers means it isn't likely to go down.

It's important to know what the rules are first, so that, when you decide to break them, you can better judge the effect.

If RAM gets cheap, does anyone here think I should grab more?

Aside from gaming, I record my gameplay, edit my gameplay footage, I use proprietary software for work to create web modules, I do programming for work and for fun, I do some image editing, and I listen to music. Usually doing a combination of these at the same time.

Thing is I have 16gb or RAM right now and I find I'm never using an absurd amount to justify getting more, but at the same time I know RAM going cheap right now would be a good time... What do you all think?

If you want to use more RAM you'll find ways to use more RAM. If you don't care then it won't matter and you shouldn't buy.

I've got 32GB and right now the biggest use of my extra RAM is as a cache for programs I use frequently.

That's after an hour. After several hours nearly all my free RAM is on standby (meaning it has data that can be used again if I start the program associated with it again). If I didn't have all that RAM it would just use the SSD or HD more.

I just hope it doesn't keep going up and up and at least levels off.

Sucks about the ram prices. I bought my ram for $90 Canadian last year.

New factories will be built and more produced one sites who make RAM (though Samsung will also start making camera sensors at one place which had been doing RAM.)
I think Samsung additional production was for H2 2018 and finished factories/factory and result on prices from that in 2019.

So pretty terrible.

What happened among other things is people wanted SSDs so they changed production from RAM to flash-ram for those and then more ram for phones plus more storage in phones too. AFAIK/U

It won't get cheap now so no problem.
Intel will launch xpoint for memory slots / as ram next year though. I guess not necessarily for regular consumers but who knows. It's cheaper but slower than ddr4.

I remember sometime around sales time last year, I bought 16 GB of DDR4 for $80. I was pretty surprised it was so low. Then I looked back a few days later, same exact RAM I just bought was around $160. couldve also been just low on supply and the high demand.

Sam here populated my RAM slot with 2x 8gbs stick for only $86 and now they are almost $200, rip off.

You can get some really good deals but those will be rare. My wife uses a webapp for that stuff to notify her of the lowest price but even then, it'll probably be those doorbuster deals.
