Is it necessary to update to the newest Drivers every time they're available?

I find that each time a new Driver comes out, I take a 50/50 risk in the driver completely f***ing everything up so I usually just don't update anything, ever, unless a game requires it.

I haven't updated my drivers for my 1060 in like 6 months so I'm wondering if it's necessary to do so if I want to play DOOM (2016)

I'm currently on 382.05.

not really

although honestly only once has a driver f***ed me so hard I had to actually reformat... usually its like a 2 min uninstall/reinstall and back to gaming so I try the latest drivers if they add support for a new game I purchase.

another reason I like trying the latest drivers is because if I do have an issue I can then immediately send an issue report and hope its documented.

I only update when a game is giving me significant performance issues or when I buy a major release that *just* came out, as there are often driver updates to coincide.

Most driver updates are only tweaking the drivers for the newest releases. Unless you are having performance issues with new drivers then it really isn't necessary. Although I would at least do it every 6 months or so to make sure you keep up with any all-around performance tweaks.

Sometimes driver updates break things. If you're happy with your current performance sometimes it's better not to update. If you do update just make sure to note down what version you were previously running so you can go back to it if you notice problems.

I always hold off until I feel it's needed to update. Update video drivers when something isn't running right and might need it.

I wait until something prompts me to update drivers... like for example, a new game that doesn't work very well so I need the newest drivers to make it work better. I was playing a game in VR and had a problem where one eye would go completely blank at certain times... turned out it was a problem with the older drivers so I updated and was fine.

tl;dr if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Only trouble is Windows likes to update drivers too, and that's almost guaranteed to be the broken one. By staying ahead, you can roll back if it goes wrong

I update my drivers about every 2-3 months or so.
or I'll update if any big new game is coming out. Which I don't really buy many AAA games so that's kind of rare.
