When I can't run games at the settings/performance I want, or when a good deal comes up, so I can sell my previous machine and get a new one.

It varies, sometimes it can be several years, sometimes I upgrade in a year or so.

I'm still using the the first PC I build in 2010 and I upgraded the gpu and cpu 1.5 years ago when I couldn't play Witcher 3 without dipping below 30 fps. I probably won't upgrade at least until 2020, at which point I'll just build another one from scratch.

Maybe 3-4 years. I might get a new GPU to replace my R9 390 depending on the game I will be playing in the near future cannot stay at constant 60fps.
You could never understand the humiliation I have gone through. . . The burden of having to be the best. . . of having to be worthy.

For me that would be 1080p 60fps at high to ultra settings. Only need 2x AA, 0 AA is awful, but just having 2x is enough. Once I can't play at those settings, time to upgrade.
