Why does browsing the Internet these days eat up so much memory?

Isn't browsing the web supposed to be one of the most lightweight things you can do (hence why so many applications integrate with browsers in order to reduce the impact for things like Chromebooks)?

Because web is memory/cache heavy. Loading lots of APIs and code and assets that go unused into memory.
