Does anyone happen to know some very reliable VPN's out there that are free &/or paid (especially for smartphone usage)? What are some of the very best?

I've been using Private Internet Access. Only $40 a year, no data cap, doesn't block torrents, and no/minimal speed loss. Works on Windows, Mac, and Android for sure, but I don't know if there's an iOS version. It can be as simple as an on/off switch if you like, but there's TONS of options that I won't pretend to even begin to understand if you're more specific in your needs.

I've got a question about VPN's. When downloading something do you need the VPN running the entire time or just when you start? Because surely running the VPN will slow down your download speed?

You need it on the whole time, as far as I'm aware. Any decent VPN will have very minimal impact on actual data transfer rate - connecting to New York from where I live in Japan plays hell with my ping though. PIA at least has an almost immeasurably small effect on my internet speed, according to SpeedTest. Like, I'm talking less than a 0.1% difference.

NordVPN. They won't share your records with your government like PIA etc.

I'm on Private Internet Access.. The only weird thing is I've noticed on peerblock that it shows connections to Xerox Corp, Hewlett-Packard, Bull HN Information Systems, and the Swedish Tax Administration, all on port 137 or port 8888... for what reason does it need to connect to those sites? (Before anyone says anything, these only show up with the Private Internet Access client running and it stops trying to connect when I quit the client).

That explains the swedish stuff anyway.

it needs to be on at all times. your packets are being routed through another computer so if the connection is terminated, the obvious result is a broken pipe. having it on is more important with torrents because any piracy activity will be detected immediately

download speed depends on the quality of the vpn. lot of good ones out there now so it shouldn't be that big of a deal
