When Steam first launched, did you think it would turn out to be so successful?

when steam first launched my passwords would randomly stop working, the password reset emails would lead to broken links, and then miraculously a day or two later my passwords, which never actually got changed, would start working again. It happened probably 30 times and wasn't an uncommon problem for other users. I avoided steam for a LONG time after that.

I started using it because it was the only way to play audiosurf.

I figured it would grow because of cool indie games.

By that time it was already a runaway success. There wasn't even anything close.

I remember thinking that Steam sucked back when all I had was HL2, CS:Source and a crappy demo for Rag-Doll Kung Fu. The first time I thought that Steam was going to be "ok" was when iD software put their entire back catalog on the store in 2007 but damn those first 3 years were rough... especially with the "Friends" feature not working properly/at all until way later.

I'd known that someone would be a big player in the digital download space since well before Steam even existed. The writing was on the wall as far back as the USENET days. I didn't know specifically that Steam would end up being the big dog till much later. If you had asked me back then I'd have put my money on MS jumping into the market and clobbering it like they had a habit of doing.

When i first installed it i thought it would just be a thing for Valve games kinda like how the Battle.net client only has Blizzard games.

Never thought it was going to be the giant thing it is now.

Not really. It was just annoying that I had to download a third-party program to play CS 1.6 at the time.

And what a piece of s*** it was at the time.

It was ugly at first and everyone hated it - many people even didn't had internet flatrates back then.

I didn't care enough to think about Steam's possible future. I just wanted to play Half-Life 2.

I didn't hate it... I didn't love it either. I just thought of it as a program to deliver any patches. It was an ugly "army tank green" for a few years too...
