I'm curious if this type of visual novel exists.

First of all, this just for straight up visual novels where you just read and make choices. No gameplay involved.

I'm curious if there's any from around say...the last 5 years or so that don't fall into ANY of these categories.

1. Slice of Life.
2. Bizarre creatures that you date, be they birds, dragons, or whatever.

Everything that I hear about from the last few years falls into one of these two categories.

And I also want to see this as well.

Combat scenes where characters fight to the death.

Seriously, why doesn't anyone want to see this in a visual novel? You see it all the time in fantasy novels.

Slice of life is the easiest to write visual novels for since there's a lot of dialogue interaction between characters (bread and butter) and while there some actiony s*** in some VNs, they don't fit well in a more static state. Even games with VN dialogue have actual gameplay in them like Sengoku Rance.

The market is also not about reading about combat scenes, especially when the audience easily has a choice to either play or watch it.

As for an actual VN that's doesn't fit that category, I'm pretty sure VNDB's got your back.

Again, that's something I don't want.

Apparantly it's a little TOO easy to write, and it's why none of them lately sound interesting me. I kinda fear anime going this route eventually, and that thought terrifies me!

I'm not talking about visual novel where constant fights occor(although depending on how well it's done, that can be awesome too. Look at Night Angel, and The Legend of Drizz't books for example.) I'm talking where for a few important scenes the main character fights someone, or at least have moments where they need to run away from something that will kill them if they don't get the f*** outta dodge, they're gonna get killed. Oh, and it's not usually done for the sake of comedy. As in it actually is made to make you fear for the characters lifem and depending on your choices maybe you will get killed.

An older VN I read called Deus Ex Demonbane was like this. There was a lot of running for your life, and near the end there was several mech battles. It's the second best vn I've ever played, after Cartaga: Curruption of the Soul.

I also wanna do another comparison game. It's about why I like Torment: TON a lot more compared to Planescape Torment. Yes, they both are chock full of really well written dialogue with very very different characters. And they both have a poor rpg comnat gameplay system. But yet the best choices in TON are to choose clever options to outsmart your opponents and do things such as counter their moves, which leads to combat scenes where the way you overcome an opponent is described ,masterfully! I'd f***ing love to see that in a VN.

it's a love story where you can see different time periods, has a stellar soundtrack and the art is.....hm, well it's more dark gothic-ish. Looks like this:

Oh wow, love that artwork. Does it have combat scenes?

Same question with Steins Gate.

It's not that I'm opposed to vns without combat scenes, I just really hate that everything I've read outside of Cartagra and Deus Ex Demonbane, and I need to scatch that itch again
