in text/still image form maybe?

That is EXACTLY what I'm referring to. The idea of reading a a regular novel where combat happens, only this time there's music and still images to draw you in even more! :D

well, there is, as always, Fate.

that's not within the last 5 years, though.

I think you would like the Ace Attorney series, even if there is a little bit of gameplay.

Muv-Luv Alternative, the highest rated VN on VNDB.
It's about humanity's last stand against an alien invasion. Combat scenes are large scale military operations of the serious and brutal "war is hell" variety. Alternative is a sequel to the first Muv-Luv which is mostly a slice of life with no combat and is highly recommended you read that first for the story.
You're not obligated to attend every argument.

Does it have combat scenes?

Same question with Steins Gate.

If you mean sword fighting or fist fighting, no.

But there are characters that die and that's all I'll say.

Steins;Gate is one of the better VN's I've ever played. It's more Sci-fi/Fantasy than slice of life but I wouldn't say the story has "Combat scenes". If you disqualified it based on that alone, you deserve to be disappointed. Your s***ty taste sets yourself up for disappointment.

Oh but Steins;Gate isn't within the last 5 years either... but it was put on steam in the last 5 years. (it originally came out in 2009) Again, stupid limitations is a sure fire way to be disappointed.

You can't even pick a game to play without someone else doing it for you. Why be picky over stupid s***?

it's a love story where you can see different time periods, has a stellar soundtrack and the art is.....hm, well it's more dark gothic-ish. Looks like this:

Extremely Abridged Version: stars the world's least self-preserving protagonist and a genderflipped king arthur. They fight hercules, gilgamesh, and some other historic/mythological figures in pursuit of the Grail.

Shenanigans, food porn, -actual- porn (if you get that version: probably the worst written you can ever find outside of fanfic. It's rather impressive for that.), and etc ensue.

ALTERNATIVE EXPLANATION:

Teenage doofus trips his way into secret magical war and does his absolute damndest to get himself killed immediately. The plot occurs despite this.

Just realized that you mean Fate/Stay Night, and yeah, the VN has actually been on my to-read list for a while now. It sounds really interesting, and I loved the everloving daylights out of Fate/Zero anime. I just need to read it iwhen I'm int he mood to spending like half a week reading a visual novel, which sadly I haven't since Cartagra.

Ok, I guess I need to clarify.

I never want to read slice of life. That bores me to tears.

I never want to read something where you date wierd creatures.

However, as far as visual novels with combat scenes go, those I'll read, but just not right now because most of what I've read lacks it, and I need to scratch that itch.

So yeah, you bet your ass I'm gonna read Stein's Gate. An extremely well written Visual Novel where my "reward" near the end is a bunch of bad porn scenes with an underage girl, written by someone who's likely never had sex in his life? Yes please!

I wasn't being picky. I was asking for clarification. You really shouldn't jump to conclustions like this and you don't need to be so rude. How about an apology?

If you take just one thing from this conversation, take the fact that I Don't always have choice paralysis triggering my ocd really badly like I do with games and movies, and my ocd isn't triggered that badly.

I'm going to eventually play both Fate/Stay Night, and Stein's Gate. I just need to be in the right mood for them.

Oh, and I didn't need anyone to decide what I read here. Someone made things easy for me and gave me the direct link to where I could ready a summary, look at screenshots and read reviews for Sound of Drop-Fall into poiso, and also get it on sale. I'm good.
