Specifically not JRPGs and not something as obvious as the Mass Effect series.

Something with a setting similar to the Aliens franchise would be great.

Sci-fi rpgs
The Fallout series
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series
Deus Ex series
Anachronix
Borderlands series
E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
Dishonored series
Alpha Protocol
The Wasteland series

Sci-fantasy rpgs
Torchlight series
Shadowrun series

There's also Hard Reset, which is definitely Scifi, but it has upgrade mechanics instead of RPG mechanics. Still a good game though.

You might check out this new one called Elex that just came out recently. It's from the people who did Gothic and is very similar to Gothic in many respects, more so to Gothic 2 than 3 which I guess is good. I'm not familiar with Gothic at all but IIRC the 2nd one was better than the 3rd.

Oh man, you have to play System Shock 2. Not only is it one of the best games of all time, it will fulfill that itch for "Aliens" like horror aboard a space ship.

Basically Space Wizardry with roguelike* elements.

*Which, honestly, kind of goes against the Wizardry vibe. Wizardry was about slowly conquering a (set) dungeon, not running through random dungeon sections.

Prey is a great first person shooter/RPG game that you'd probably really like. I mean the Prey game released in 2017, not the 2006 shooter also called Prey, though that isn't a bad game either.

Yes! System Shock 2 is really good, and I'd advise you to play through it the first time vanilla (i.e. without mods), and then the second time through using the recommended mods at:

https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=4447.0

and SCP Beta v4 (System Shock 2 Community Patch beta version 4, a fan made patch that fixes a lot of bugs and glitches, and evens out or improves a lot of other things).

Some people would say skip the vanilla playthrough, and playthrough the game with the mods and SCP4 instead, it's up to you, but I'd say vanilla first, as the two experiences are different from one another as you'll find when you've played it through a few times.

The same with Deus Ex, by the way. I'd say first play it vanilla, then play it with the superb GMDX:

http://www.moddb.com/mods/gmdx

Deus Ex isn't set in space, but it's one of the best games ever made (my favourite PC game), so you really should play it if you want to play a really good first person action RPG game.

Also, the first System Shock is great too. There are no mods that I know of for it, though :o(

Mind you, a fan made remake, called Citadel, is due out soon:

http://www.moddb.com/games/citadel/mods

it looks amazing. Plus a commercial remake/reboot of the game is on the way, but if you don't want to wait then the enhanced version of the game is available from:

https://www.gog.com/game/system_shock_enhanced_edition

The enhanced version is Windows compatible, has higher resolutions, and better controls. System Shock was originally DOS only (it was released in 1994) and could be awkward to get running right, but the Enhanced version works perfectly. Or wait until Citadel or the reboot is available, it's up to you.

And though they're not RPGs, Alien Isolation, Dead Space, and Dead Space 2 (I didn't like Dead Space 3, though).
I'm a PC and console gamer - I love good games, regardless of their host system.

@Kerr_Avon

Great post but I really think in this day SS2 should be played modded the first time through, both graphics and SCP patch give the game a lot of polish and make it so much better.
