Microsoft claims that they charge for XBL because every game that is playable online first runs through their servers to assure quality gameplay yadayada yet PS3 and WiiU have the same quality

PSN and Live are not the same. I own dead island on both consoles, and on psn it is way more jittery and jumpy and rubber-bandy than on live. when i switch the game to offline mode, smooth as butter.
My first console was a colecovision, so yeah!

Honestly, have no idea. But there is definitely a lot more to the service than people tend to think there is. For instance, keeping account details secure on the servers, keeping achievements and gamerscore tracked, having people to support it (engineers to keep things running and fix issues, enforcement folks, the folks who man the support lines, etc), and then the servers running the service itself.

Between maintaining servers, paying employees, and managing the various studios that develop their exclusives, I'd say it costs a bit.

Live would generate lots of money for MS just from ads.

Don't believe that is costs the hundreds of millions in rakes in just from the fees, let alone the advertising. There are millions of users daily. That has GOT to be some nice cash cow for MS.

all the time

PSN < Xbox Live

Same thing happens when my buddy brings over his copy of Borderlands 2 for PS3. My Xbox copy plays way smoother when in online mode.
