Skyrim (made RPGs more prominent)

GTA IV

I wanna reach through my Laptop screen and stab you for saying this

As much as you don't like either, you must admit that, technically speaking, they are both very impressive.

The Gears of War series for making cover

LMAO, so wrong. I love Gears, but the fact is that that type of cover system was pioneered by the game WinBack in 1999.
Note to GFAQs mods: You do an absolutely terrible job at modding trolling. Get better at it and give harsher punishments for it.

But it popularized and perfected the system. It was mostly garbage before.

Gears made TPShootin' smooth as melted butter.

you just called skyrim technically impressive? that game is a mess on all platforms. the gameplay/combat and animations are a disaster for 21st century standards.. 30+ sec load screen the game.. only thing slightly impressive was the scope and graphics..

thats all I'll give skyrim

To be fair, Skyrim was ambitious. If it weren't such a buggy mess (even after over a year of patching) I'd argue that it's one of the top five RPGs on the 360. As for it being influential, I think it might have come out too recently to really influence any gamers taste or gameplay design.

Gears of War - as stated before basically refined the third person shooter as well as Horde mode.

Halo 3 - Stuff like forge and theatre mode was amazing as well as all the customization and bungie.net

Portal - made console puzzle games matter

Call of Duty 4 - self explanatory, basically influenced every FPS after it.

Bioshock - atmosphere and story

Mass Effect 1+2 - just a grand expansive universe for a game

Uncharted 2 - shows games can be as exhilarating as a blockbuster movie

Oblivion - Made RPGs cool in western areas

Skyward Sword - Defines motion control

Wii Sports - it's Wii Sports, everyone's first motion experience. Helped cause the whole industry to change

Little Big Planet - User created content

Can't think of any others at the moment.

I agree with this also.
