Related to Gunvalkyrie2's post about trying several times to get into a game and not being able to, I thought of this question.

I've had several games that I could not get into on the first try:
Fallout 3
DA1 and 2

The thing is, I tried playing each of these and found severe shortcomings in them. In particular, I thought the graphics were lacking and I couldn't get past that hurdle. Fallout 3 was especially bad to me, though it eventually became a favorite.

However, I eventually hit a point (on the second or third attempt, usually spread over months) where it just clicked. Once it did, I became obsessive and played the games to 100%, finding every nook and cranny in the game. So I wondered if anyone else had this experience too..?

Battlefield was hard to get into after playing a lot of CoD, but it was definitely worth learning how to play.

Fallout 3. Got to level 8 but even up to then felt kind of like a chore. I just stopped playing it, sold it, and didn't even think twice. Later on it was on sale really cheap and for some reason I REALLY wanted to play it. Picked it up again and didn't stop playing until I beat the main game and three of the expansion packs.

Would still like to go back too (have it on Steam but not the same because...) some of my achievements glitched so I'd like to get some of those and make take a different path too.

This is one of the best experiences you can have in any pursuit, acquiring the taste for something. Last time it happened with a game for me was Silent Hill 4.

Deus Ex - When I was younger I did not appreciate Deus Ex much. Liberty Island felt boring to me. The story is not for young teenagers really.

Demons Souls and Dark Souls - The lack of a decent plot, music and goal didn't push me far at first. But, later, I persevered.

Half-Life 2 - I quit halfway or so because I found it so darn boring. Even later on I didn't particularly care for it.

Silent Hill - The first time I played it I was so scared I returned it.

Hey, thanks! :p

But really, I understand because I actually do feel the same way. I eventually felt guilty about dismissing these games because of the graphics and went back to them. DA was especially hard: I couldn't get past thinking that they looked like PS2 graphics. But then once it clicked--once I acquired the taste, as -3703 put it--I was hooked. I'm glad I gave it that chance because it is a great RPG, Fade and all.

I try not to be put off by graphics, but sometimes higher expectations creep in.

Dragon Quest VIII. Took me 4 tries, but I finally got into it on the last attempt and boy what a fun game it is. I want to try a fisticuffs only run at some point.

I had a hard time getting into Bioshock and Trials HD the first time I played them, mostly because I didn't know what I was getting myself into ahead of time -- a psychologically disturbing game and an extremely difficult game, respectively. On my second try, though, when I knew what to expect, I enjoyed both games quite a bit.
