I don't see the point in deadlines. Duke Nukem Forever still got done. It is uninteresting to me but still got done. Go 'indie' if you don't want publishers in the way, earning and spending your own money to make something great for other people to enjoy and then inevitably getting more money from it is the dream, isn't it?
If someone is stupid enough to buy it there will always be someone smart enough to sell it.

I don't see the point in deadlines.

It doesn't matter whether you see the point, the fact is they exist and that's the way it is. Which is exactly why you sound naive.

Duke Nukem Forever still got done.

By a new company, who created what might as well be called a new game, in 2 years. The DNF that was released was not the one that was "worked on" for 14 years.

Go 'indie' if you don't want publishers in the way, earning and spending your own money to make something great for other people to enjoy and then inevitably getting more money from it is the dream, isn't it?

And now you've found the reason you were wrong in the first place. Indie developers very very very rarely ever have "drooling-some zomg GRAPHICS!!", because they can't pour money into it like a publisher can. Every once in a while there are standouts (Dear Esther), but with literally millions of indie games in-between, that's the exception, not the rule.

You're 22? Maybe it's time to put down the fairy tales and learn how the world works.
All's fair in love and war, kid.

It's a balancing act that's totally up to the hardware, developers are looking for balance and to meet goals they've had to make sacrifices to achieve. More powerful hardware means less sacrifices simple as that. Not all games need to run at 60FPS though 1080p will be the standard, there's really no debating this unless the hardware does turn out to be absolutely garbage, games up scaled to 720p will be looked as poorly upon as games running at 540p and up scaled this generation. The next generation will have A LOT less in terms of compromises than this one, even if the hardware blows.

The PS3 or XBox simply does not have the hardware (including RAM) to run games at a native resolution of 1080p without a ton of sacrifices, the only games that have really achieved it this generation are the more simple games like many of those found on the PS Store.

Next generation hardware should easily allow for 1080p with more complex visuals while maintaining a stable frame rate, be it 30FPS or 60 as the PC has been capable of doing for years now. Of course with the rumored hardware in the next XBox and PS4 maybe not. <_<
