If that were the case wouldn't xenoblade have a lower score than FFXIII, as lets face it nintendo spent about 2 pence marketing that. Or a better example wouldn't megaman 9 have a higher score than cave story. Or another example wouldn't sonic the hedgehog 4 episode 1 have a higher score than super meat boy. Wouldn't metroid other m have a higher score than no more heroes.

I think you're mistaking "a counterexample exists" for "every case is a counterexample". Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. If the critics were ALWAYS wrong, you could simply invert their opinions and get a reliable answer. It's the fact that they're sometimes right but often wrong that prevents them from being useful.

There's an obvious correlation between the size of a studio and the scores their games get. It's not a totally causal relationship, but the trend is undeniable. It's also clear that lesser-known games get fewer reviews and the ones they get are often shorter and less in-depth. Smaller games simply don't get the same volume of time invested into them as the more major ones because sites like IGN are businesses. They know that not as many people will be reading the reviews for a game like The Kore Gang as Uncharted 2. Is that understandable? Sure. But it's a form of bias nonetheless. - Watch me beat "SNES F1 ROC 2 Race of Champions" - My backloggery

So mainstream and acclaimed games sell better than other games? Did we really need a study to tell us the entertainment industry is acting exactly as it's supposed to? Bears Beets Battlestar Galactica

Of course people are sheep. Everyone is directly or indirectly influenced by their surroundings.
People may think they have their own personality but it's their surroundings that made them into the person that they are.
There's already been a lot of studies into this that have shown it to be true.
Valkyria Chronicles is the best RPG this gen!
