Most people complain that an RPG is too short nowadays, if there is any complaint about length at all.

I can't think of any console RPG's that came out on PS3 that were "too long". I CAN think of a PC RPG that also came out on PS3 that is "too long" - Sacred 2.

40 hours is considered "too long" now?

It is when 20 hours of the game is filler.

This. I'm fine (and supportive) of games being 80+ hours as long as they're fun and engaging the whole way through. NNK was a big miss for me.

Dragon warrior 7...Running around collecting puzzle pieces in some weird obscure hole you would never think to look or randomly appearing in already previously explored section of the game you would have no reason to go back to otherwise. Having to search every village with a fine tooth comb because god forbid you miss a vital piece that halts progression of the entire game and have fun finding that one hole you missed...ugh.

I liked the game, I really did, but it's so directionless and you spend literally dozens of hours wandering aimlessly looking for that ONE missing puzzle piece you need to progress.

It took me 70 hours for me to beat the first play through (no guides) and about 20 of that was just searching aimlessly for pieces to move the plot along. It was long for all the wrong reasons.

I'm with both of you on this one. I put 100 hours into the game back in 2005 and STILL haven't finished it to this day. I love Dragon Quest, but VII is probably my least favorite in the series. Altogether poor pacing.

Glad I'm not the only one who experienced this. I think that I'm close to the end of the game even.

Not only that, but I tried going back to it to finally finish it up about a year ago and I spent about 3 hours trying to figure out what I needed to do and then quit again because I have no flippin' clue.

Dragon Warrior 7, but I loved the game enough that it didn't feel like it dragged on.

I never consider a video game "Too long". There may be games with unnecesary filler/fetch sidequests but i will never complaint about a game's lenght.

Breath of Fire 1-4(I think I'll refer to the series as Bursts of Filler from now on).

I'm certain there will be more I'll think of later.
