Ubisoft have said they'd prefer to explore settings that most games haven't touched (feudal Japan and China have been done to death). It's kind of stupid considering how perfect those settings would be for the series while now they're adding needless game mechanics just to fit in with these new settings that don't compliment the core assassin gameplay at all.

I would love to see a game set in China, though. Embers introduced a Chinese assassin and China's supposed to have its own assassin brotherhood (so any plot related excuse is out the window). I don't know if the Assassins or Templars had any reason to be in Japan, though, given how isolated and xenophobic they were historically.
