Looking to play Japanese PS1 and PS2 games, and it seems I might be able to get a CECHA12 PS3 for relatively cheap. Problem is, CECHA12 is not actually a Japanese console: it's the region code for Hong Kong / Taiwan / Southeast Asia. That said, the console is labeled NTSC J.

Does anybody know if such a console would play Japanese PS1 and PS2 games? The NTSC J would lead me to believe it should, but I'm still hesitant.

I have this console and yes it can play PS1 and PS2 japanese games. It's can also play PAL digital download PS1 and PS2 games. It's the only PS3 that can play both PAL and NTSC DVDs region 0 or 3 perfectly while my CECHA01 can only play region 0 or 1 NTSC DVDs only.

All PS3 units enforce the region lock on PS1 and PS2 physical games. If it isn't a Japanese/Asian PS3, it isn't going to read Japanese PS1 discs. The console is only effectively regionless for PS3 games, excepting the handful that have a region lock.

If the console has the NTSC J region tag, it is able to play PS1 and PS2 discs with that region tag on their label. Only 4 regions existed for PS1 and PS2:

NTSC J - Japan, parts of Asia
NTSC C - China
NTSC U/C - United States, Canada, parts of the Americas
PAL - Europe, Australia, the rest of the world not covered by the NTSC regions

Match the region tag on the disc to the region tag on the console to know if a game can be played.
