So I have a 80gb model, got it back in 2009 and I believe the internet card within the system is starting to go. Not only am I always asked to put in a date when I turn the system on the but my internet usually won't connect no matter if I use the ethernet cable or use wireless. BUT heres the kicker, it will randomly connect to PSN at random times. If I disconnect, turn the console off and turn it back on it usually won't connect to the internet again.

My PS4 on the other hand connects to the internet with no issues what-so-ever so I do not believe this is a firewall issue or what have you. Only lately has my PS3 been doing this as well, probably for the past 2 months or so.

So I have to ask, is it common for these older model PS3's to have worse boards or worse network cards built into them? I have a PS3 super slim on the way so I'm not too worried about it, I just hope the super slims won't have the problem in the coming years. I still want to at least update my games via patches through the internet. Do the Super Slim models have better made motherboards and network cards built it?

Thanks.

A friend of mine has the super slim Playstation 3 (the one with that awful sliding door) and I have the fat model. We were both downloading from my internet connection and his was done with the same files when I was only at 20%. That's all I have for you.

As far the build goes, I recall all playstation models have the same wireless network adapters (Wi-Fi: IEEE 802.11 b/g)

All I can say is that my phat version PS3 is extremely slow to connect to PSN or browse the web. The speed is moderately higher on my PS4 but not by all that much.

That could be partly because of my *****y internet speed or the console itself I have no idea. Connection is wired btw so no WiFi.

I don't know. My fat PS3 didn't download any slower than my slim PS3 does. I'm pretty sure the PSN network is throttled on PS3 because it takes fractions of the time to download on a PS4, even with wired connections.

PS3s download very slow, but in my experience, they are all the same.
