Lets face it. Blizzard has NEVER been good at telling stories. Their dialog is cheesy, story elements pop up out of no where, etc etc.
D3 is no exception. Having played up to Act 3, the story is just not doing it for me. Its far too sparsely connected. It seems like the majority of the main story is just random tidbits tied together by a stranger who earned everyone's trust by killing 5 zombies outside of a gate and murdering a zombie blacksmith wife.
Blizzard's art team is top notch, and without their superb art direction, their characters would be dull and lifeless, throwing around corny one-liners.
In comparison, D2 seemed to be a bit more cohesive, story wise.
At A3, I still dont really know what is going on. And i dont really care.
I agree. Worst part of the game. Utterly predictable (there isn't a surprise you won't see coming from a mile off, in fact you can pretty much figure out everything that's going to happen in Act 1) and cliche upon cliche upon cliche. I've never had any respect for Metzen or the Blizzard lore/writing team but even I didn't believe they could write something this awful.
Say what you like about Stephenie Meyer and the Twilight series but she will forever be remembered in literary history for the invention of Vampires.
