The right answer is Lightning Returns.

XIII system is fun, until you realize the inly agency you have at all is choosing paradigms... The game is so linear even the battle system is an auto-battle corridor.

Go into Configuration and turn off auto-battle. The game becomes much more enjoyable, and more pressing than even the atb games at times. I'd recommend it if you ever have another playthrough.

But auto-battle is not a configuration, it's an actuall battle command. I know you can input your commands manually, but honestly, it always felt sub-otimized. I begun playing that way, because I'd much rather have full control over what I'm doing, until I realized auto-battle would already always choose the best available skills anyway. So, taking input time into account, I begun feeling like the game was actually punishing me for trying to take control. The only battles auto-battle wasn't the best option I had was against the adamantoises/long guis, when the one skill it would never choose (the special skill for each character) was actually somewhat useful. Not surprisingly, they were the battles I enjoyed the most in the game...

XV's combat has issues but it's still a blast.

lightning returns and x2 are banging. for as real time actiony as xv is, its way too simplistic to be properly fun

that said the only ones i actively disliked playing were 9 and 10

I don't know about the mmos but X was certainly the last Final Fantasy game to have as much depth as it does (X-2 as well if you want to count the direct sequels). XII lacked things such as blue mafic, mix, jump, and throw. XIII took it a step ahead by removing steal, and shrinking black/White magic variety to the point where all the nukes were gone. XV took out white magic just like Lightning Returns and replaced buffing spells with food buffs; debuffs also seem to be missing.

The storylines themselves seemed weaker but for differing, more subjective reasons.

I'll admit I never give much thought in things like this and other s*** people get their panties in a bunch over, so XV by default simply because I have no problems or complaints about any of them so as it's the latest it's the "last good one."
