Cloud, Squall, Cecil, most of the Vl cast..

was there something about the 90's that inspired all these moody, angst-ridden characters? and that's not a critique of them, I generally prefer the moodier characters to the happy, c***sure characters like Zidane

That was the "in thing" of the 90's.

Japanese Cloud wasn't moody at all. English localization is the worse.

90's was all about the mood. See Grunge music

English Cloud wasn't moody at all. He was just a dick.

Further, I don't think it's accurate to say most of the Protagonists of the 90s were moody when that only applies unequivocally to exactly one of them.

IV - Cecil worked for an evil empire and had moral issues, but changes when he stops working for them. He's serious, not moody.
V - No one is moody in the slightest.
VI - Terra & Celes could both loosely be described as "moody," though uncertain of themselves seems more appropriate. The rest of the FFVI cast (Edgar, Sabin, Locke, Relm, Strago, Gau, even Umaro and Mog), sans maybe Cyan, are obviously not moody.
VII - Cloud is an arrogant dick until his big realization near the end of the second disc/ 80% of the way through the game, where "moody" becomes his defining character trait for the rest of the series.
VIII - Squall is moody, no question.
IX - Zidane, is basically the antithesis of moody.

While moodiness was definitely a 90s thing, the FF protagonists never reflected that.

Cloud, moody? Only at the beginning; he's actually pretty cheerful and laid back starting around the Shinra HQ. Him being moody is more a misperception by the fan base than anything else (and is of course justified for much of Advent Children).

The only "moody" protagonists in Final Fantasy are the one obviously on her period angrily going around yelling and punching everyone, and the whiny emo brat who sits in the car looking done with life and willingly goes on a glorified suicide mission. Neither of these protagonists are from the 90s.
