I'm still a bit confused about Dr. Schrader's

I understand he somehow managed to come back to life, but when he opened the box, did he just 'appear' dead for a while? Since it was all an illusion from the gases given off by the metal, he never really 'died' to begin with, correct? Or did he just look like he was dead, and the gases were affecting Chelmey and Layton/Luke? Sorry if it sounds like I'm getting too deep into this, but it doesn't make sense to me for some reason xD
He didn't really come back to life since he wasn't really dead
He appeared sufficiently dead (something like a coma) from a cursory examination which was the trigger for sending Layton off on his adventure
While he would've been found to still be alive when examined by a medical professional, Layton would've already left by that point and didn't find this out until after the mystery had been solved for a happier ending
