At the end of the prologue, why did that guy salute Alicia and call her Ma'am?

He also salutes her and addresses her as "Miss Melchiott." This is despite her being a 21-year-old Sergeant:

Technically, you only address Warrant Officers and civilians like that, of which Alicia is neither. Also, everybody knows that you don't salute enlisted personnel or call them "Sir" or "Ma'am." I realize that this game is based on fantasy, but these are glaring errors. Wouldn't anybody who did even the tiniest bit of research on military protocol know these things?

She is still a team captain in the town watch at that point in the game. She is not yet sergeant in the militia.

It's only after escaping Bruhll (after chapter 2) that she enlists in the militia and is given the rank of sergeant for her past experience in the town watch.
