Although this doesn't have very much to do with any of the other story lines from the other games, you should consider that the black hole Chief for the first 2 games had the super power of "meteor strike". It said that sturm (the black hole chief) was also an invader from another planet. Perhaps through some turn of events, Sturm managed to live through hawke's black storm, and launched the meteor strike as revenge. By this time, however, the world had changed and all the people he was trying to hurt with this were dead and gone. Or perhaps the bomb that black hole had in AW2 was detonated after all the years by mistake.

I'm having a "Spaceballs" vibe reading that.
"What are those?"
"I believe those are Spaceballs."
"... There goes the neighborhood."

The first three AW games (AW1,AW2,AWDS) all had different planets, so perhaps they were all "aliens" going to war on different planets? It's not like the maps were like the Zelda or Dragon Warriorfranchise -- the map from the first games were integrated into the maps of the 2nd games. I figure this must be like an Alpha Centauri moment where the group goes from planet to planet and training the local populace to fight for them.

Continental areas, not planets.

Wars World is the 'planet'.

Omega, Macro and Cosmo land are continents.

Ah. That sounds a little better.
But on the maps in-game, weren't the "battle map" non-contiguous land masses?

I'd like to see a game where all the maps can be tied together. (Like Dragon Warrior II or Zelda II were expansions of the previous games' maps.)

Yeah, the maps have been non-contiguous since Advance Wars 1 (Although, they generally represent the area of the map they're in. AW1 and AW4 are pretty good at that).

Super Famicom Wars had an entirely contiguous world map, though!

Yup. Or perhaps hemispheres or something would be more accurate, since a few of them have more than one continent. But its all on one planet.
