I'm just wondering what the distinction is and if it's actually worth the huge cost to buy them.

Usually the legendary skin has bonus effects, such as Corporate Mundo with his briefcase etc.

Some of them also have different particle and visual effects and new voices, as well as sound effects.

Pretty sure the 1800 something RP ones all have a new skin, certain effects (trist shooting water, teemo shooting lasers and dropping radar thingies, briefcases for mundo) and a different voice (most well known being mundo/cho ones) I don't actually have any so dunno the details. But yeah they put enough effort into those skins to make them worth more, imo.

Of the "legendary" skins, the only two without a noticeable change (as far as I know) are Magnificent Twisted Fate and Red Baron Corki.

Tristana: shoots water instead of cannonballs.
Heimerdinger: turrets look like ray-guns.
Cho'Gath: voice changes quite a bit.
Mundo: new lines.
Teemo: shoots lasers instead of darts, mushrooms look like satelitte dishes, voice is changed to sound as though it's passed through a transceiver.
Annie: Tibbers is dressed up in the Easter Bunny suit from Hell.

I know Riot calls many skins "legendary", but I think only two truly have that distinction: Corporate Mundo and Gentleman Cho'Gath. They have different effects, voice acting, and appearance, not just one or the other.

I'd say Astro Teemo, Firefighter Tris, and Alien Heimer are pretty "legendary" also because of the different particles/effects.
If there's anything more important than my ego around, I want it caught and shot now.
So long and thanks for all the fish.

I think Teemo could qualify. He has a different walk animation(Unlike Mundo or Cho-Gath), lazers, satellites, voice effects, etc. etc.

Riot: This skin is legendary.

Skin: Ok.

That's what makes the skin legendary.

Also, Astronaut Teemo is quite possibly the greatest skin that they've ever come up with.
