to figure out the preseason changes before ranked starts

You can do that in draft instead. Next.

help or hinder your mmr to affect placements in real season

I thought they said last year that playing in the preseason would only raise you mmr. If it goes down then they just take your mmr from the actual season.

Can anyone confirm?

If I get confirmation I'm going to play ranked all preseason. If not I'll just level smurfs. Plz respond

after 10 straight minutes of scanning google under various searches, this is one of the only links I found that had a post even address the possibility of losing mmr in preseason AT ALL. The poster was, though, a normie, so take with a grain of salt, but if in fact there was such a beneficial system in place, it would be better known or discussed.
Why is it called 'common sense' when it is so rare these days?

Except that there's the system where dodges in placements count as losses, and that's not discussed at all. Riot keeps a lot of their systems under wraps until someone asks about it, so I wouldn't be surprised one way or the other.

1) dodges in placements do NOT count as losses
2) It is well known among informed individuals, like this would be if it were real.

Every post on this yields the indication that Riot is more intent on giving players an accurate starting rank than giving them the highest one they may or may not have deserved

If it is the same as last year, then your mmr will be affected. It's not at the highest/end of season when the soft reset happens.
