For the majority of my LoL career I've been a botlane (adc/support) main but now i want to truly be a toplane main with ad secondary. What do i need to know? How do i use the teleport spell?

Don't. Top lane is for idiots.

Despite being arguably the least profitable lane to gank, it's also usually the easiest which is why toplaners get camped a lot.

Also don't die, if your opponent gets remotely ahead you might as well give up the rest of the lane

tp is best used to go botlane when the enemy botlane is overextended/fighting and you have a good chance to go in. if you dont get forced to burn tp by going back to lane after getting harassed out/ganked, then you always use tp for joining fights, preferably in the botlane

learning how to manage the wave top is pretty important because of how long the lane is. beware of jungle ganks because top lane is by far the easiest lane to gank and learn how to ward intelligently.

also try to save tp when you can. saving tp by walking back to lane and missing 2-3 creeps is better than using tp for that couple cs that you miss. obviously if youre gonna miss like two full waves then use tp tho

Just take the crows approach, complain everything that beats you is OP, blame everything on JG even if its not their fault, and always dodge against AP Shacos on the enemy top lane since its going to steam roll you

Top lane is the most true 1v1 lane in the game. You do not have a support nor a reliable chance of ganks past the first 6 minutes, so every little advantage and microplay you make has lasting effects that nobody is going to be able to help you with, most of the time.

As such, counterpicks make up an enourmous part of the lane dynamic. Most "counterpicks" a non-top player will encounter are "soft counters"- that is, they have a significant advantage over you in lane. An example might be Draven vs. Vayne. Top lane is particularly prone to having "hard counters"- which are champs that do not simply have an advantage over you, but who have kits that render you useless or outclassed in every conceivable way. An example of this might be Quinn vs Tryndamere. Being firstpick top is a disadvantage due to counterpicking, almost no matter who you choose.

Top lane is generally populated by melees (generally lategame fighters or tanks/bruisers), with the occaisional short range mage or ad carry played as a niche role. In noob games, deaths occur very fast and frequently. This is because melees typically get into imminent combat range just to get CS, so any time a player thinks he can fight the other, he will do so, and the length of the lane typically provides enough space between turrets to chase down your single opponent to their death, 100-0 over the course of maybe 15 seconds or less early on. Trading on a strong opponent is dangerous because of this possibility. Poke is limited to lane bullies, those of which who are in fact only lane bullies due to said poke (teemo, pantheon).

In the case that one opponent does not have ranged poke nor strong 100-0 potential in lane, it becomes a brutal war of attrition. Leaving lane to heal or buy means your enemy can abuse the wave position to freeze to their advantage, or shove to kill the turret, or reset the wave to their own turret, all of which are undesirable for you. Therefore, teleport is often used to quickly return to lane.

Teleport is a generally useful spell for returning to lane if you struggle verses your opponent, so they can't abuse your leave so hard, which has more sifnificant ramifications than for a mage mid or ranged ad bot. But often people save tp for #lcsbigplays bot lane, and for splitpushing later on, which is imo its most reliably effective use.

League of mobility and soft cc (including frozen mallet) can make it so melees in general are unable to land any hits on an opponent at all; not just inhibiting an escape or chase, but effectively shutting them out of fights. It makes the game hard nowadays if you aren't a tank in the current meta and don't get fed in lane.
Why is it called 'common sense' when it is so rare these days?

3 min jgl gank esp when you are blue since your jungler can come through tribrush.
But if your wave Management is bad you cant expect your jungler to help you much.
And Crash Dives are rare in low/mid elo.

If you proceed to brushgank/come again after he tps back to lane for the second kill and push the wave in top is done.

Use the first tp until 5/6 min so you are rdy for the first bigger teamfights/objectives.
Look for the enemy to go in to tp for the flank/pincer so they are alrdy deep enuff where they cant get away.
Some champs like Malph can be a bit more lenient with tps tho since you can engage with ult.
You can do some cheese tps into early fights which is fairly unexpected when a fight starts out, but can win you games.
In casis of drake/baron fights you may wanna consider tping early if your Team Needs you.
esp. when you are the only frontline you cant w8 for your Team to engage on the drake fight without getting rekt first.

If you feel like you cant lane, abadone lane and roam if your champ is good and just catch the waves/freeze on your second Tower.
Most ppl wont expect the roams and it can snowball the game hard even if you got screwed.
