To Be Announced:

Valkyria Chronicles 2 (PSP)

A sequel to the best SRPG on any current console is heading to the PSP. As anyone who has been playing SRPGs knows, all of the action has been on handheld systems in the past couple of years. This sequel looks like it provides more recruit customization than before, along with ships and new types of artillery, tanks, and other heavy mobile units. Let's hope they keep it light on the dating sim element and no super powered robots show up.. don't ruin a good thing Sega!

2009 North America:

Hero's Saga Laevatein Tactics (DS)
Release Date: 09/29/2009

A very basic SRPG with minimal customization, uncomplicated map design, and below average difficulty. Having played the Japanese version for a couple missions, the game seems to be aimed squarely at kids. Despite containing a 'switch to another screen' system like the recently released Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume and SMT Devil Survivor, it is gimmicky and poorly implemented, and might as well not even be there.

Dawn of Heroes (DS) Developer Interview, Screenshots
Release Date: Q3 2009

A western developed SRPG that was shown off at TGS 2007. Majesco has picked up publishing rights for this game and it is headed to NA this year. It looks decent but I've found western developers often burden their SRPG/TBS games with slow, clunky, buggy user interfaces, and they are rarely a challenge.

Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment (X360, PS3)
Release Date: Q4 2009 (downloadable only)

A new entry in the Vandal Hearts SRPG series - despite being published by Konami this is actually another western developed SRPG. According to impressions this game tries to keep it as close to the original as possible. With no extra combat systems to keep things engaging, and the same kind of uninspired, forgettable maps, this will likely be the most boring release of 2009.

Military Madness Remake (X360, PS3, WII)
Release Date: Q4 2009 (downloadable only)

A remake of the original Hudsonsoft TBS game. It's similar to Advance Wars and any Daisenryaku type game. There are a few new features added including 4 person multiplayer. This game should be a great value considering the DLC will be around $15 US at most.

Bleach: The 3rd Phantom (DS)
Release Date: 9/15/2009

This licensed SRPG is being developed by Sega, which has been very hit or miss the last couple years. Everything I've read about it indicates it's a simple, easy kids game that just happens to have an SRPG theme to it.

2009 Japan:

Super Robot Taisen NEO (WII)
Release Date: TBA 2009

Another yearly quarter, another Super Robot Taisen release. More Japanese only giant robots duking it out in this SRPG.

Queen's Blade: Spiral Chaos (PSP)
Release Date: 12/17/2009

While completely perverse in nature, this SRPG will likely be quite good since it is being developed by Namco-Bandai's veteran Super Robot Taisen team. That's a good excuse to play it, right?

Spectral Force Legacy (PSP)
Release Date: 11/2009

A remake of the original Spectral Force SRPG. Knowing Idea Factory the game is likely to be bland and cheaply made, like most of the SRPGs they crank out.

Moe Moe 2-Ji Daisenryaku * Ultra Deluxe (X360)
Release Date: TBA 2009

This is a remake of a game formerly released on both the PS2 and PSP. it's a TBS/Daisenryaku hex type game where instead of tanks and planes you have hentai-themed girls with wings and such attached to their arms. Looks good if you're a disgusting pervert.

R-Type Tactics II: Operation Bitter Chocolate (PSP)
Release Date: 10/27/2009 (downloadable and retail)

A sequel to R-Type Tactics (R-Type Command in NA), promising a lot more ships, more crazy boss fights based on the original shmups rich history, and Vs play.

Unless there are some male Valkyria then they already ruined it by making it the typical magical fighting girl series.
Gamers have lost their pride.
