That's right folks. I've been playing this game all week with a copy I rented. No code or nothing. You don't need to buy the code to access the online. My guess is that the code is for the free dlc they're bringing out.
All you have to do if you don't have the code is when it asks you for the code in multiplayer, just hit O (cancel) and the message will go away and you can begin playing.
the code gives you access to the few maps they added to the game on day of release, check the store and look at the VIP maps. of course u can play online without the code, u just can't play every map, it's just like the vip code for bad company 2, jeez.
where as Activision will start to charge for online, that will most probably be in the same way, but instead of EAs take where you can play online, but its all basic maps and outfitting...
I will put money on it that Activisions charge will mean that unless you buy the game new, then you will not be able to play online unless you pay a one time fee...*insert screenshot of Xbox live charge image as of earlier this year*

It's a seven day trial but EA extends it for individuals that they want to continue with the online play free of charge. Basically, as long as you log in and play 3 times a week for 9 or more hours EA extends your pass. I don't know if it's week by week or monthly but this is what they've been doing.
I havn't played in a while and was forced to buy the pass. It sucks but it's how things work now.
