You might not realize this, but "classic" mode of MI2SE has a couple of shortcomings. The biggest is that the music in it generally sounds like ass - instruments are weak (weaker than they should), and transitions are abrupt and lack the original's full dynamics (as they do in "special" mode as well).

Smaller stuff includes the lack of easy difficulty mode, and a shorter intro.

I have just discovered that the original data files are fully included in MI2SE - you just have to dig for them. These data files can then be used with ScummVM, which much better approximates what the game SHOULD be like.

First you need Monkey Island Explorer. Follow the trail of breadcrumbs starting here:
http://www.lucasforums.com/showpost.php?p=2737694&postcount=22

Once you have it, run it. Click "Open," "Monkey Island 2: Special Edition," and then browse to the game directory, which should be:
<steamDir>\steamapps\common\monkey2

Open the file "monkey2.pak." Click "Save all files" -> "Save all as is (raw)." Choose a directory to save the files in. Then wait awhile. You might get ScummVM while waiting, if you haven't already.

Once it's done, which will take several minutes, go to the directory you saved stuff in. One of the folders should be "classic" and should contain two files - monkey2.000 and monkey2.001. Rename this folder to something like "monkey2" and delete everything else. Install ScummVM if you haven't yet. Move this folder into your ScummVM directory.

Launch ScummVM, click "Add Game," browse to that monkey2 folder you put in the ScummVM directory, and click "choose." Click "OK."

You can now play Monkey Island 2 through ScummVM, and hear that Adlib iMUSE in its full glory. Or Adlib MT-32 if you're a real nerd and have an MT-32.

Erratum - "classic" actually contains another folder called "en." THIS is the folder that has the data files, and should be moved to your ScummVM directory.

They also removed the telephone hint line on Dinky Island. It simply gets you at the beginning without that scene. A pity, this was one of the funniest game moments.

You also miss out on the original credits unless you play the original in SCUMMVM.

They removed the hintline on dinky island? That's odd since it's an achievement/trophy for the 360/ps3 version to use it.
