I thought it would be cool to have a giant tree in the middle of my castle, so I was planning to plant four trees next to each other, and then when they grew I would put a layer of dirt on top of them and plant four more ect. Would this work, or would the trees be to close together? Also would putting a layer of dirt ontop of the trees be enough for them to grow?

as long as you have the space, light, and the 1 block of dirt for each one they should grow even on another tree
Protip: When digging down, don't stand on the block you're removing. Not unless you like to plunge head first into a giant cave filled with lava.

Aside from a large tree randomly growing from sapling, you could try growing them near one another and stacking them. Trees require 2 spaces on each side, 7 above. If you were to place a dirt block on top of a grown tree and clear those 2-block space on each side, you could plant another sapling. There was a thread on the MC forum a while back when the new tree system was implemented with someone making a *monster* tree Quite impressive.

sorry to say but your wrong about the spacing it's 3 blocks on all sides and 4 over the sapling for it to grow

So I have to put the trees four blocks apart for them to grow? That means the tree will only bee one tree thick =/

The size of the tree that grows is random. I've grown huge trees before (25+layers high) but it's apparently rare. Happwned when I planted a tree next to my tall house, tree grew higher than the house.

It's possible to create a giant tree but it doesn't grow on its own, you have to build it.

The tricky part is making the leaves grow, you can only make that from newly spawned trees by planting saplings.

Sorry, singleplayer spacing must be different. I know SMP trees can grow with 2 spaces on the sides. I haven't played singleplayer in a long time, and probably won't any time soon.
