Like the lifting effect of lift grenade?

Or is it better to have a shep vanguard use barrier as a bonus power, detonate it, then use nova right afterwards?

If a target is lifted, they are primed for a biotic detonation.

Always read "lift" as "prime."

So yes.

With DLC I say Lash is the best bonus for a Vanguard. Reave if no DLC.

Reave a group, charge in, then nova. The charge will cause a detonation, and if there was a second enemy that got reaved, nova will detonate them. If they're organic (and most enemies in the game are), you'll still have your armor.
