I'm confused on the whole memory thing.

-The 3DS has some memory in there. How much is there and what is stored?
-I know the SD card is 2 GB and it's pretty much everything I've seen so far
-Game saves still save on the game cart right?

Not sure how much memory the system actually has since I used up a good bit of it already. Probably fits 10-12 good size dsiware games.

If you plan on using the e-shop frequently, replacing your sd card will be a must.

All games save to the cartridge, but many require additional space on the sd card for streetpass etc. My Dead or Alive Dimensions game has DLC every day, so it has eaten up 200+ extra blocks already.

From what I understand, there is 256 MB that is left useable in the internal memory for things such as applications, photos, and such.

3DS has 2GB internal flash memory of which 1.5 can be used.

Really, because I think some of that memory is reserved and/or used by the system applications.

maybe it's not 1.5GB ( according to wiki ) that can be used but it's more than 256MB. I currently have 22 DSiWare games on internal memory with 51 blocks still left. I couldn't fit that many games on my DSi not to mention some photos and sound recordings.

256mb of it are available for DSiWare, to simulate how much internal memory the DSi had. The rest is used for StreetPass Mii's, OS stuff, Activity Log, some photos, some recordings, and other things.
