I feel like the lowered dpad is going to irritate me

I though so too.
The best way to try it now is to just put an imaginary dpad under the real dpad on your current ds.
It didn't seem too bad to me after trying that.

Just imagine playing a ds with your left hand a bit lower...that's really all the difference would be.
Not insanely awkward but might take some getting used to.

I don't think I've ever used the dpad on the gamecube for movement

^ Then I think the same applies for the 3DS, except except for DS games with unconfirmed slider backwards compatibility.

Depends on the distance my thumb will be to the L button. Or if DS titles will support the slide nub for movement.

except for when playing DS games, to me it seems the dpad (and on a side note, the touch screem) will play a much lighter role in this generation.
