The 3D version of Avatar is projected brighter then the 2D version because the polarised glasses dim the light. I know this doesn't use glasses, but will it still need to work around that?.....

You kind of answered your own question with that one. We will not need a stronger backlight since we aren't using polarized glasses which dims the screen.
3DS is going to be the best portable ever and hopefully one of the best consoles ever.
