Effective August 11. Converted to about $192 USD, so if a US price drop happens then $199.99 is likely.

My guess on the price drop:

1. Lackluster hardware and software sales
2. Vita is coming out soon

That'll be great for people to get onboard.

the R&D is probably about to be payed off completely, so they can drop the price to beat out the Vita
this was quite predictable, though it came sooner than I expected

Well, this could be the reason as well - Nintendo just posted an operating loss from last quarter:

That doesn't look too good for them.

Why wouldn't we agree? 3DS hasn't been doing too hot in Japan with even the PSP outselling it most of the time. A price drop would make the device more accessible allowing Nintendo and 3rd parties to sell more copies of games.

yeah, it looks really bad for them. after half a decade of wiping their asses with 100 dollar bills, they make a minuscule loss in a period they release a new Console and develop a new one in.
THEY ARE DOOOOOOOMED

seriously, 37 million yen is less than 500.000 USD and only about 330.000 Euro
that's absolutely nothing for a company this big
