...much more than the typical slow adoption rate that many consoles and handhelds have but eventually recover from once they get software?

I doubt it. The 3DS has nothing to cause it to fly off shelves, yet. Come November there will be a surge.
An infant sea turtle is actually capable of killing an adult African bull elephant. It does, however, require a substantial amount of surprise.
