I didn't really think about it before, but that might actually feel nicer than the d-pad for playing in certain games. Does that work?

yeah, for regular DS games the circle pad acts like an 8 directional d-pad

It makes several games much more pleasant to control, Mario 64 DS and Mark Kart are great examples of this.
