This is probably the only TV Tropes page I still ever link.

you realize that was a wiki page, right? you realize that wiki pages can be edited by anyone? So after reading that, on a subject that is obviously opinion based, that EVERY game will have moments like what was listed there, I am gonna stick by what I said. 'fake difficulty' is a spoiled and lazy gamer term.

This is why Miyamoto prefers our version of Super Mario bros. 2

Yes. It still pretty much matches how I feel about fake difficulty.

Also the main article usually isn't edited and the entire wiki has discussions of "I think this should be re-defined/renamed" and so on, where everyone decides what to do. If some bloke just edits it, it'll get changed back and they get in trouble.

Fake difficulty? Wtf is that?

No such thing. The TC and a few others seem to mention it a lot, but really, it doesn't exist. Basically, he considers all kinds of difficulty that isn't based on twitch-based skill, fake difficulty.

Name Ikaruga and say it's a difficult game, and he'll most likely say that it's fake difficulty, because you have to memorize enemy patterns and whatnot to beat it.

What? That's very silly. There is such a thing as fake difficulty. Have you ever played all of those Mario ROM hacks? Where people choose to base the challenge of the game on things that punish the player in ways that they could never have anticipated, or react to? Or a ROM hack where players have to look for random blocks with no skill involved in discovering them?

SMBLL doesn't have fake difficulty, in my opinion, but it DOES exist.

The "it's a wiki" argument hasn't really been valid since the mid 2000s, so that's basically a red herring. And several people have still given a good definition of fake difficulty which you have chosen to completely ignore.

Red herring? wtf are you talking about? Anyway, you're right, i typo'd my original message. I meant what games are just true difficulty. I guess I just come from a time when games were just difficult, period, regardless of fake difficulty or whatever...

Gamers don't want difficult things anymore, at least the "core" gamers (the so called cores are as vanilla as it gets, but there's more of them and they buy more)

fake difficulty does exist even if not everyone uses it correctly.
time limit is so low that you can only make it if you never stop running,a genre defying gimmick (like putting a math problem in a platformer),etc.
