Anyone who had an N64 knew of Atlus because of Snowboard Kids, which sold over a million. (back then being a pretty big deal)

Falcom and XSEED are definitely the noteworthy example. And Wayforward. I'd say CiNG but I don't think they're still well known.
Not changing this sig till Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is announced for VC.

I'd say Criterion would also fit - they've been around since 96(!) and now they're apparently big enough to get their name in the actual title of one of their games (NFS: Most Wanted - A Criterion Game)

And then there's Bethesda Softworks, who have certainly come a long way from developing Where's Waldo on the NES.

Oh wow, I still own Snowboard Kids and I never knew it was that big of a seller... nor did I realize it was made by Atlus...

I didn't really pay that much attention to all the details on games back then and I didn't know any friends who had the game, just me.
It's a secret to everybody.

I say ATLUS. They haven't thrown out too many games, but the 3DS already has 4 titles from them! You don't see that many titles from them in such short time.
