Nintendo isn't even interested in producing enough copies of core games, let alone invent new ones.
Baseless prediction as of 01/04/13 : the next Xbox will be called the Xbox On.

Do they need to? Not necessarily, but it'd be nice if they did more than one new IP per generation.

Your "friend" is over-critical, and you can apply his/her childish logic to the others, too.
"Mario is overdone, it should take a break"
"Pokemon is for kids"
"No one cares about Metroid/ It sells poorly"
"*Insert equally generic Zelda reason".

I just got playing Sacred Stones, and I'm finding it so far fantastic, so I have hope for FE. They don't need NEW franchises, they just need to keep a lot of their more obscure ones going.
