Yes, for portable gaming devices the second screen helps a lot in games that properly utilizes it.

I wouldn't mind. I like the GBA/PSP design more than the DS one...

As much as I like it for some games, it's useless for a lot of them. If it meant a larger, higher quality screen I wouldn't mind them losing the lower screen and just going back to one.
I like the second screen - even when it's not used in super interesting ways, its usually helpful/reduces HUD clutter without implementing 1000 menus. I also think the clamshell design is perfect for portability because it reduces your chance of scratching/messing up the screens even if you aren't neurotic and buying covers and bags/etc.

Leave the bottom screen alone! A lot of DS games, which are still played by people, need said screen. plus lots of 3DS games rely on the screen.

I've always liked the second screen, especially for games like castlevania. (Instead of constantly pausing to look at drop lists or the map like in symphony of the night or curse of darkness, you have all that info already conveniently laid out for you on the top screen for the DS castlevania games). Situations like that makes having a second screen worth it.

The DS/3DS's two screens is a rare example of good innovation in gaming. So yes, I would mind losing it.

That would be horrible for so many reasons.
