I bought some cheap ones off of Ebay that came with a bundle for the 3DS XL. I didn't really plan on them being that great, since I bought the bundle for the other stuff. Anways, the bottom screen protector when on fine but the top wouldn't go on without bubbles. I threw the top one away, because I figured the top screen would be fine without it.

Now I'm wondering if I should have just kept it on or tried a couple more times to get it right. Is it really necessary to have the top screen covered?

Normally no, but for me, I have one and I noticed a line on the top screen from the bottom screen borders scraping the top. So I'm glad I have a protector on the top one.

Yes because the bottom edges touches the top screen which leaves smudges. The smudges aren't so bad because you can just wipe them off but they could lead to permanent scratch over time.
