Pretty much this. The people who outright say the controls are bad are only a vocal minority, the game certainly wouldn't be getting as high user scores as it has if the controls were broken.

Yeah the controls aren't BROKEN at all they're just terribly uncomfortable...

They aren't. You just need to get used to it. It's no different from getting used to handling a Wii-mote or learning anything else.

Except that the beginning stages of the Wiimote aren't actively working against you playing it through pain

And, except that the Wiimote was actually intuitive. The KI controls are anything but intuitive haha, even for seasoned games they take quite a bit of time to get used to and even then they're not ideal. 85yr/o's in retirement homes pick up the Wiimote and are playing it within minutes, trying giving one a 3DS and KI and let me know how that goes, lol.
